Dearest Gentle Viewer,
It’s been almost a year since I released anything. When last we met, I’d said I couldn’t imagine when I’d have the time or energy to devote to a proper video. Things are very different now and I found I needed to pick up Vegas and AE again.
Our daughter passed away early November last year. I’ve been struggling with a lot of things, my sense of purpose being on that list. I vacillate between days with zero motivation and times when I’ll grab anything and everything to fill in the gaping hole she left behind.
I’ve done one piece of video editing in the interim. Our daughter’s funeral ceremony was filmed and edited by a professional, but my wife and I were both greatly disappointed in how it turned out. There was only one person who could edit the raw footage and put it together in a fashion that would do Izzy justice. It only took 3 days, but the effort exhausted me. There’s a certain amount of disconnection on any video I’m working on, especially when it gets down to the finer details. I had to experience the event again and again and again because that’s how the editing process goes. I wasn’t consciously feeling it, but my brain and my heart certainly were. The pain was worth it because the edit managed to capture the emotions that were present that day. My daughter would have loved it because one of her favorite things in life were books and movies that “gave all the feels.”
When the Blue’s Clues pilot (Blue Prints) surfaced, I knew I’d want to work with it. With no deadline in mind, I picked this one apart. It’s an incomplete work with large chunks missing. A lot of the familiar music and voice acting isn’t present. But it’s still charming and our man Steve is fully engaged from the start. One day I'd love to meet this guy.
I don’t think I’ve broken any new ground as I like to do with my Blue’s Clues edits, although there were a few things I had to figure out to bring certain ideas to life. More importantly, doing this gave me some level of joy. It was a pleasure to weave a new narrative into the material. It’s an analog to what I’m doing in my own life. Choosing kindness, especially kindness for myself, is a way of shifting perspective to a healthier place. It is a deliberate (and necessary) act, sometimes day-to-day, sometimes minute-to-minute. All the little moments we experience gets rendered into this thing we call life. Even the painful moments are worthwhile (and necessary).
In closing, don’t forget how awesome all you guys are. I mean that, so you can wipe the fucking smirk off your face. Give yourself a bit of compassion because you deserve it. Then go find someone important to you and let them know you love them. For real.
