Many katana martial arts instructors teach their students to eventually ask a modern swordsmith to make a custom katana for their training.
However, my sensei told me that he is against that general idea. This is because he believes that katana trainees need to have the modesty to think that “The person doesn’t choose the katana, but the katana chooses the person.”
The way of budo is to develop your skills so that you can master the sword that has chosen you. You have not really achieved much growth by being able to use a katana that has been specifically made for you.
The purpose of training katana is not to cut enemies or to cut mats like an anime character. It is to develop the humility to face one's weaknesses and the strength to confront them.
I really hope you can visit a real katana shop someday. And after holding the right katana you will immediately think, “This must be the one.” This is the moment you were chosen by the katana.
