Neutron stars are what is left over from a supernova explosion. Neutron stars are called such because gravity is so intense that their core consists of neutrons - all electrons have collapsed into the atomic nuclei. It is matter at the edge of oblivion, just above being a black hole and effectively disappearing from our Universe.
