The streaming narrative is increasingly becoming YouTube versus Netflix.
YouTube has launched a promotional hub for young-adult programming—something it regularly does for genres ranging from cyberpunk and supernatural soaps to 90-minute movies. But the larger story is Netflix feeling pressure to increase watch time among younger viewers as YouTube continues to lead.
According to Nielsen figures cited by the Los Angeles Times, YouTube represented approximately 14% of streaming watch time on American television sets in May, compared with Netflix’s 8%.
There was a time when YouTube’s lead could be dismissed as “just user-generated content.” Is that distinction finally disappearing?

Marvel and Disney announced a formidable lineup:
- Marvel’s next X-Men movie will feature Kit Connor as Cyclops, Christopher Abbott as Professor Charles Xavier, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, Maya Boyd as Storm, and Adam Driver as Mr. Sinister. It is expected in theaters May 5, 2028.
- Avengers: Doomsday arrives December 18.
- VisionQuest, the WandaVision spinoff starring Paul Bettany, arrives October 14.
- Ahsoka Season 2 arrives January 20.
- Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter, starring Ryan Gosling, takes place beyond the Skywalker saga at the latest point yet depicted in the Star Wars timeline. It arrives Memorial Day.
- Disney is planning a third Zootopia movie.
- Jon Favreau will direct and executive-produce Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, a three-part Disney+ miniseries arriving in February 2027.
- Disney’s live-action Tangled opens March 31, 2028.
- The live-action Lilo & Stitch sequel introduces Stitch’s pink alien love interest, Angel, and arrives May 28, 2028.
- Pixar’s original film Ghost Market, inspired by Asian myths about markets where the living and dead interact, arrives in spring 2028.
- Coco 2 arrives in November 2029, with Miguel now a teenager.
- Incredibles 3 arrives in June 2028.
- Disney Animation’s Clay arrives in 2028, with Kieran Culkin leading the voice cast.
- The Bluey Movie arrives August 6, 2027.
- Disney and Square Enix announced a Kingdom Hearts series featuring a new story that expands its universe.
- Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 3 premieres November 20.
- The Mandalorian and Grogu reaches Disney+ on September 2.

- Beginning August 24, YouTube will count a public view as soon as a video begins playing across every format. Creator earnings and Partner Program eligibility will still depend on engaged watch hours and engaged Shorts views.
- Peacock is raising prices: Select increases from $7.99 to $8.99 per month, Premium rises from $10.99 to $12.99, and Premium Plus goes from $16.99 to $19.99.
- Spider-Man: Brand New Day became the second-fastest movie to surpass $2 billion, reaching the mark in 17 days. Avengers: Endgame did it in 11.
- Apple TV subscribers can now find complimentary movies in a “Great Movies Available Now on Apple TV” carousel. The selection varies across the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.
- Google TV has added more than 10,000 free, on-demand movies and shows without requiring additional apps.
- Netflix is adding dozens of classic Cantinflas movies to celebrate Mexican Cinema Day.
