Some Recommended Series
La Casa de Papel (Spain)

La Casa de Papel was a huge success in Latin America and Spain. It tells the story of a carefully planned hijacking of the Spanish mint by a group of very interesting criminals. In a similar fashion to Denzel Washington’s Inside Man, they take hostages and take control of the building while they execute their master escape plan. La Casa de Papel is engrossingly entertaining and you will fall in love with the characters with names of cities. You will understand once you start.

2. Club Cuervos

Even if you are not a soccer or sports fan, Club Cuervos is a hilarious and sometimes surprisingly accurate picture of the politics surrounding soccer in Mexico. The inexperienced and egocentric Salvador (Chava) and his competent sister Isabel inherit the club from their deceased father who made the club the heart of the community of Nuevo Toledo. The show is now shy with its sometimes dark humor. You are guaranteed to be constantly laughing at the funny situation surrounding the club. You cannot find a better series to learn Mexican slang, but also be exposed to other Spanish accents.

3. Pablo Escobar, El Patron del Mal (Colombia)

If you are interested at all on series like Narcos or the history of drug trafficking in Colombia, El Patron del Mal is for you. Often Colombians prefer not to be only identified with Pablo Escobar, but this series is Colombian produced and offers a deep perspective on what happened. We recommend this series over Narcos because it is more authentic, and uses Colombian actors in contrast with Narcos that uses a Brazilian actor to play Escobar. A lot of Escobar’s power was his ability to communicate so it is worth hearing a native speaker playing him.

4. Rebelde (Mexico)

Any Mexican who grew up in the early 2000 probably remembers this high school telenovela. This is just what it seems mindless entertainment but it can become very addictive and you will have a conversation topic with many Mexicans whether they hate it or love it. It also comes with a lot of music.

5. El Marginal (Argentina)

If you want to practice the Argentinian accent, check out this series set in an Argentinian prison. Our hero, Miguel, has the complicated mission of infiltrating a criminal band entering the prison as a prisoner. The trama is captivating and it takes many twists and turns. Remember, Argentinians use vos for you and some have a sh sound for y and ll.

6. La Casa de las Flores (Mexico)

The public has been raving about this modern version of your traditional Mexican soap opera. This Mexican wealthy family opens up a series of dramatic secrets after the death of the mistress of the family patriarch. It seems that everybody in the family has some dark skeletons in the closet This is truly a modern look on drama and a relaxing show at the end of a hard day at work.
