Shoutouts to Mysteryman for this adjustment. This run bests his WR by a frame, which also happens to make this fight match the TAS time! This is a very peculiar fight to optimize. With the way this fight works, it technically only requires *one* frame perfect input, but there are a few catches that go along with that.
Firstly, none of the inputs in this fight matter until the 1:35 mark on the fight timer (youtube timestamp is 1:00). You want to get to a specific spot in Bears attack script at that *exact* frame, because Bear will decide what type of attacks he does depending on what whole second the in-game timer is. In this run, if I were to get to that spot 1 frame earlier, Bear would throw a delayed hook with the squirrel on his head and ruin the fight.
My approach to this problem was to buffer as many things as possible up until that point. Every buffer in phase 1 is frame perfect to make sure my pace is sufficiently good. First buffer is 1 dodge, 2 quick dodges, and jab. Second buffer is simply 4 full dodges into jab. Third buffer is 2 dodges, 1 punch, dodge, quick dodge, jab, and triple star punch.
My phase 2 buffers are intentionally *lazy* so Im wasting an amount of time such that my average counter timing makes it really likely for me to get to the correct frame I need to be at. This just so happens to be compliant with literally all left dodges for everything in phase 2 lmao.
Phase 3 is the important part. You need to counter the first hug, then cancel the 2nd one, counter the Catch & Release hug, then do a centering hook. This centering hook dictates your entire pace, because the very next attack is going to be the pivotal attack at 1:35. You can elect to do this centering hook sooner if you feel your manual counters up until this point have been bad, or you can do the hook later if you feel all your manual counters have been really tight. This is hard to really judge accurately in the moment sometimes, so this really comes down to judgement calls to increase your odds of success.
After that centering hook, Ive found a frame perfect buffer to always counter his next hook (2 dodges, then right jab, left jab). And right here is the only *mandatory* frame perfect punch aside from the weird centering hook if youre going for a 1:32.79, which is dodging his hook, stunning him, and throwing the final triple star punch. My pseudo buffer for this final attack is that Ill wait until I hear Bears footsteps hit the ground, then do 2 dodges. It works really really well in my opinion.
Anyways, thats it for this fight! I got this ridiculously fast after finding the buffers and testing stuff in emulator, which was something like an hour of actual attempts. Im thinking about improving my Sandman time a little bit before moving onto a different fight, since I feel I can do a least a little better on those cancels for now. Anyways, thanks for watching!")

This run was done on an original Spanish Super Nintendo cartridge of Super Punch-Out, as well as an original PAL Super Nintendo 1chip console that was recapped and modded with the Borti RGB amp.
Masked Muscle is a fairly innocuous fight in the full game speedrun. He doesnt dish out luck that can outright kill your entire lead due to a couple of backup strategies, but despite this, he has a fair bit of randomness that can make getting the perfect fight on him mildly annoying.
The fight starts off with the usual guard manipulation that youve been seeing in other fights where you hold up for the first frame of the fight, then let go and hold punch for the second frame, however this fight introduces something new into the mix: random blocking from the opponent.
This happens to be a very similar strategy as the newer NTSC one that McHazard found in his 2014 TAS (I know its weird to call that new but it still feels new to me lol). With this strategy, Muscle can block the first two punches, and the final punch that sends Masked Muscle into dizzy status. These are the only luck events in the fight, and the first blockable punch has a 3/4 chance of going through, while the second and third blockable punches have a (3/4)^2 chance of going through since theyre buffered punches. This means the odds of the strategy working are:
(3/4) * (9/16) * (9/16) = 243 / 1024, or about 1 in 4.214 (~23.7%)
Once you’ve landed your first left gut punch of the fight, then immediately buffer a second one and pray he doesn’t block either of those. Thankfully, the next 2 left gut punches you’re about to buffer here will land 100% of the time, since Muscle is attempting to throw hooks here, and while he commits to throwing an attack, he cannot commit to randomly dodging during that time. Its also worth noting that this is technically different than the NTSC version of the fight, as you cannot buffer left jabs here since Muscle blocks them in the PAL version. You can technically do left jabs and get the same time, but you would have to delay them, which is silly to do when you can just do gut punches.
After the 2nd jab, you need to do a slight delay and counter an uppercut that Muscle is about to throw on your right side, to which, you counter with a right gut punch. From here, you need to hit a frame perfect delayed punch such that when the punch lands, you get 2 extra arrows, as well as speed up Muscles recoil animation.
You can either time this delayed punch manually, or do a buffer that involves you to do 2 quick ducks which are actually pretty tricky, because this means you have to tap Down and Up extremely quickly one after the other.
Several years ago, Hootey had actually found that if you do not have your super meter completely filled up, that holding the A button will actually automatically cancel your dodges for you, which effectively eliminates the Up portions of the quick duck inputs, meaning now your only obstacle is to quickly press the Down inputs at the correct rhythm. Its still fairly tricky to get it down just right because of how fast the ducks come out now.
If you hold Down too long, then you end up getting a quick duck that isnt actually the fastest, which makes the punch get blocked. If you over compensate for that by going too fast, then youll only have one duck actually come out.
Once you get the double quick duck, buffer a right gut punch into a left gut punch, which should hopefully get Muscle dizzy (remember he can block the final punch if he wants), and just hold Left until you start to see your character start to dodge, then immediately let go of Left and throw a low super as your character centers himself for an instant knockdown!
For phase 2, the NTSC version has you throw a low super exactly *1* frame after the fight starts back up again, otherwise hell dodge your punch outright, however, inexplicably the PAL version doesnt have this issue at all. You can simply hold the super punch button and just automatically hit Muscle on the first frame possible with a low super. From there, Muscle will not be able to get up, which nets you a KO if you followed this strategy perfectly!

Both myself and fellow Super Punch Out speedrunner Hootey both got the opportunity to race each other in Super Punch Out blindfolded at a GDQ! The time listed was my finish time from pressing start until the TKO appears at the end of the Nick fight (this time accounts for the accidental quick start by adding a second to the time).
This game is ridiculously inconsistent and difficult to beat blindfolded at all, let alone in a marathon setting. When I beat this game blindfolded in AGDQ 2014, it had tons of lucky breaks in it, so a repeat performance would require an intense reroute to heighten the chances of success before another marathon showing would be worth attempting.
Both Hootey and myself have been hard at work finding extremely fast setups and ways to make many of these fights as consistent as they could possibly be. That being said, Super Punch Out is wildly random in terms of getting extremely fast times, even to the point where most of our setups are either mostly consistent but cant be completely or we just literally have to options for some fights in terms of consistency.
Despite everything, both of us were extremely close the entire race with tons of huge lead changes. I am also ecstatic that both of us were able to handily beat the AGDQ 2014 time that I got for blind SPO, which really shows how far this game and the community surrounding it has come!
This also happens to be the second time Ive ever completed a blindfolded Punch Out run at a Games Done Quick event to where I never lost a single bout with any opposing boxer! The first time I pulled this off was actually the most recent Wii Punch Out run at SGDQ!
I am super proud of how far Hootey has come in learning this game to the point to where we were both handily capable of sharing our hard work and practice with the GDQ audience this year!

I started this TAS several months ago, but left it unfinished due to various other distractions that took my attention away from it. Theres likely several improvements that others could make over this, but I felt like this might be a decent starting point for others to build onto if they wanted.
For people who might be unfamiliar with what this is all about, a fellow by the name of @new_cheats_news on Twitter found several undiscovered cheat codes for all releases of Super Punch Out!

The 1st one is by pressing and holding Y+R with the 2nd controller while 1p presses A or Start on the title screen. This brings you to a secret menu where you can fight any opponent. If you select a character on that hidden menu, then hold B+Y with the 2p controller during the pre-fight text while pressing A or Start, then the 2nd controller lets you control the opponents!
This TAS was made to try answer the question of: What are the best possible times you can get as player 2 if player 1 happened to throw out whatever attacks that are beneficial for player 2?

There are quite a few fights that end up being weirdly trivial, while some others end up being either interesting, or really silly. Ill give some descriptions of each.
Gabby: For this TAS, both players hitting each other on the same frame will cancel some of the end-lag of player 2s attacks, which ends up saving time in some cases! I fit some in to complement the damage from Gabbys Cmon! charges, which freeze the clock. These fights are optimized for in-game time, so attacks like these will be used when available.
Bear: Pretty similar fight to Gabby, but exchange the charges for bear hugs.
Piston: This one likely took the most effort out of the entire TAS lol. I went through several drafts of this strategy, since the first several strategies had so many double hits that Piston would go dizzy, meaning I would have to make him back up to freeze the clock and let his meter drop back down. This version ended up being the best damage per second for double hits that I could find. Piston also starts phases with uppercuts automatically, meaning it needed to be worked around. Im not convinced this is the best strategy, but its good for now.
Bull: Similar to the other TAS, but Bull takes the win each charge.
Bob: The fast hooks are filthy on Bob, and mixing it with his windmill charges make this fight a really quick one.
Dragon: His kicks freeze the timer and are instant knockdowns, making this ridiculously short.
Muscle: Muscles quick jabs, punctuated with headbutt, makes short work of phase 1. Its worth noting that moves with a lot of end-lag ends up usually working out to be faster at the end of knockdowns, since the timer stops immediately when the final blow connects. This is also the first fight where a P1 KO seems to be possible, due to how short phase 2 ends up being, combined with how low health P1 has right before the knockdown. KO mechanics against P1 appear fairly similar compared to the normal game.
Sandman: This might be my favorite, because Sandmans big jab is so ABSURDLY powerful, and its speed is hilarious when cancelled with double hits. I also have Sandman take P1 out with 2 fast jabs, because if you throw a powerful hit for a faster phase 2, P1 doesnt get KOd, and the KO ends up faster.
Aran: I tried a lot of different stuff for this fight, but fast attacks + 1 normal jab always ended up being the winning strategy.
Heike: The same disgusting hook from Bob shows up again, and its very clearly the most lucrative button as far as damage and speed. Hair, while powerful, has a very long startup, and ending a phase with it gives P1 a big refill for phase 2, making a KO not quickly feasible, since Heike automatically starts phase 2 with a scripted uppercut.
Clown: Instant knockdowns too strong.
Macho: Super spin freezes time & connects 1 frame after the timer starts again, making this the shortest possible time for a fight to end with in the game.
Narcis: The fast 3 jab combo lends itself well to setting up a KO, and just being better than every other button he has.
Hoy: Stick partially freezes the clock & deals massive damage, making it the move of choice for this kind of TAS. It also happens to leave P1s health just low enough for a 1 phase KO.
Rick: Instant knockdown + fast hook secures yet another ridiculously fast KO.
Nick: Instant knockdown + fast uppercut makes short work of this fight.

Done on the Arcade Archives port of arcade Super Punch Out released on Nintendo Switch. This port actually appears to be based off of the Japanese romset, which has different voice samples than the US version, and a few differences on a couple of fighters themselves.
This mode sets a 5 minute timer for you to get as many points as possible under the timer limit. This is probably my favorite leaderboard in this port since it puts a heavy emphasis on skill, speedrunning and optimization over lasting in an endurance run.
This run had a good start, but kind of fell apart a little at the end of the Macho fight. It seems like thats a section that I dont quite have figured out, since throwing a super to end the fight almost always ends up causing awkward situations that drag the fight out longer.
I got to finish the 2nd phase of Bear Hugger 2, but ran out of time sadly. If I can get to Bear 2 with over a minute of time to fight him, as well as get good luck on getting more 3 counts when opponents are down, I can see it being possible to gather the fight bonus with frames to spare, but the luck and execution make it extremely difficult.
Its also worth noting that the game will save your top 3 times, but only sometimes? Ive found no rhyme or reason as to which ones it saves, so it makes it kind of difficult, since any time you get a top 3 time, it will play a longer cutscene that shows you that your time is being ranked.
Ill be actively trying to improve this, at least until I get a run that finishes the Bear Hugger 2 fight and collects the fight bonus. By the time you read this, the record may have changed hands, as the player in 2nd is also actively improving their score quickly too! Weve exchanged the record a handful of times already, so expect more of that happening soon!")

This was also done on an actual original Nintendo Power cartridge, which was the only way to legally own this game for playing on a Super Famicom. Effectively, the Super Famicom and Gameboy had these unique white flash cartridges that would hold a couple of select games depending on how big the game ROMs were. You would go up to kiosks, insert your cartridge, insert money, and select what game you want from a select few that they had for this service, and have it downloaded onto your cartridge! The one that I own happens to have an original download of Super Punch Out for Japan on it, making it fairly rare to own, as Super Punch Out was only released for Japan exclusively through this service in the late year of 1998! This cartridge has a super unique intro sequence, with a pretty sweet little jam of a music track. Ok, finally I can talk about the fight itself, haha. This version of Super Punch Out is completely identical in terms of the mechanics in every fight compared to the US release, *except* for the bizarre oddity that Rick Bruiser seems to have a much faster recoil animation for when Rick goes into his dizzy animation! Ricks recovery from the last bodyblow of phase 1 in the Japanese version is 15 frames faster than in the US version, resulting in a first knockdown of 6.69 as opposed to 6.98. Everything else about this fight is exactly the same as in the US version of this fight.
Ive done this exact run before, but I did it on an SD2SNES. I figured since Im about to redo a ton of Punch Out fights to take advantage of my sick RGB recording setup, that I should do this run on the actual cartridge this time, since I actually own it now.
For the first punch of each phase, I have my gloves down for the first frame of the timer when it starts, then on the very next frame, I throw a left jab for phase 1, or an uppercut for phases 2 and 3. Whenever Rick is attacked with an unstunned punch, he reels to the opposite side and throws a counter-jab. The counter in phase 1 doesnt really have a great cue, so I just try to punch as soon as I see my character centered from dodging the counter-jab. From there, everything is buffered for phase 1.
After you throw the guard manipulated uppercut at the start of phase 2, just dodge the counter-jab, then dodge his next hook and instantly throw a low super for the knockdown. Phase 3 is exactly the same as the start to phase 2, as it only contains the guard manipulated upppercut. These uppercuts only have roughly a 5/8th chance of landing, so it can be slightly annoying to get.
I should be reuploading super high quality ILs for this game really soon. I want all my IL times to be done on a SNES, since half of the IL times I did like 10 years ago were on Wii Virtual Console. The quality between videos on my SPO fights vary wildly, and Id like really like to get them all to look just as clean as this one. Thankfully the SPO IL fights are really easy by comparison to the ones in MTPO or PO Wii, so they should be showing up pretty regularly after this upload.

Just a couple of things I should talk about here before I get into the final fight of this game. First off, it should be reiterated that a lot of these recent Super Punch Out videos Ive been uploading are fights that I matched nearly a decade ago, and my main incentive in uploading these again is to update the quality to all be consistent with each other, and be as high quality as possible now that I have an RGB setup.
Secondly, most of these uploads were all recorded within a 3 stream span back in January, with a couple of exceptions (Bald Bull needed to be redone due to a real-time improvement, Clowns strategy got improved twice, and Narcis is just bad). I figured uploading these gradually would give me time to get the high quality encodes done in my spare time, and I could take my time on research that I do in my YouTube descriptions for each of these videos. It also prevents inbox bombing everyone, which in general, can be kind of annoying to some people.
Anyways, so Nick Bruiser is the final opponent in the game. In terms of a single segment run, he can be a pretty tense fight, in that you need to react to the height of his punches in order to successfully KO him, although this is only realistic on a setup that has little to no input lag.
However, despite that daunting version of the fight, this one is nothing like that. This fight starts with... just buffering 2 left face jabs. Despite all the times weve needed to manipulate the opponents guard, Nick just doesnt have any guard for the first 25 seconds of the fight.
Once you buffer 2 jabs, then you need several things to align. You *must* assume that Nickll throw a jab on your right. Secondly, you need to hit this jab on the first frame possible, whichll make Nick recoil faster than usual. I time this frame perfect jab immediately around when I hear the music get to its high note, which seems to work pretty often. This punch is the only frame perfect thing you need to hit to match this record.
Once you land the jab, you need to buffer a left jab, then do a tap duck which involves holding Down on the dpad until the instant you see your character start to duck, then immediately let go. Once your character is almost centered, buffer B to hit Nick on the final frame of his stun. From there, just buffer 2 left jabs and he should go dizzy assuming he doesnt block at all. From there, just buffer 2 right guts into 2 low supers for the knockdown (low super is also 99 frames faster in real time than uppercut for dizzy knockdown, just like Rick).
Phase 2 is trivial, as you just need to buffer 2 consecutive uppercuts. Why doesnt everyone do this in full game runs, you might ask? Well the luck is pretty terrible, since you need Nick to throw high (1/2), the 80 frame delay so he cant block in phase 1 & attacks at the perfect time in phase 2 (1/4), Nick to throw high in phase 2 (1/2), Nick to take an uppercut (5/8), AND for Nick to not get the 24 frame delay in phase 2 which allows him to block the final super (7/8). With all of this, we get a probability of [(1/2)^2]*(1/4)*(5/8)*(7/8) = 35/1024 ~ 3.4% of success with this strategy. Fairly rare, but certainly not the worst that the Punch-Out series (or even SPO for that matter) has to offer, lol.
