YouTube just changed the Partner Program requirements, and I don't think enough people are talking about how much this could hurt nerd creators.
Starting February 1, 2027, new channels will need 8,000 watch hours a year to qualify, double the previous 4,000. Shorts creators now need 20 million views in 90 days instead of 10 million. Existing partners are grandfathered in on entry, but even they have to keep hitting that 10 million Shorts threshold every 90 days just to keep earning from the Shorts pool.
In this special Daily Planet, I break down what this actually means, and why I think communities like ours are going to feel this more than most. Smaller audiences mean smaller watch hour pools, and doubling the bar makes it that much harder for the next wave of nerd, cosplay, and prop building creators to even get started.
