China has fully reopened the only road leading to the Gyirong border crossing with Nepal, allowing heavy machinery to reach the core disaster zone for the first time since the devastating floods.
Chinese state broadcaster CCTV showed rescue teams, excavators, life-detection equipment and search dogs being deployed in the affected area. A rapid-response disease-control team has also been sent as authorities work to manage the growing humanitarian and public-health challenges.
China’s official toll remains at 16 dead and 546 missing in Tibet. Among those still missing are 104 Indians, 49 Nepali citizens and 33 Latvians, according to the information provided by authorities.
