Nearly a week after the devastating flash floods in Nepal, scientists and experts are increasingly pointing to a glacier collapse and massive ice avalanche as the likely trigger.
The disaster on August 26 sent a huge surge of water and debris through the Narayani-Trishuli river corridor, devastating villages and damaging infrastructure, including several hydropower projects.
The expert explains how a massive volume of ice and rock may have travelled nearly 2 km from high in the Himalayas, blocking a river and creating a temporary natural dam that later breached, unleashing the destructive flash flood.
The disaster is being seen as a warning for countries across the Himalayan region, including Nepal, India, China, Bhutan and Pakistan, as researchers continue to study exactly what triggered the catastrophic event.
