Neopets: The Darkest Faerie is not without its faults. I will always respect what it attempts to do so much, but those attempts also damage its overall structure. There are two big things that I always think about:
1. Who is this game REALLY for? I don't know who the audience for this game is (it should not be for me, but it turned out that way). It could be kids who frequent Neopets a lot, or a tween audience who want a serious game that isn't for kids.
2. The absence of difficulty. This connects to the audience problem. You are given so many items to manage your health, magic, and other stats, that you can be almost indestructible. I failed to take advantage of a lot of different potions because they were not necessary for aiding my victories in the game. I made reference to the phrase "Cartoon Dark Souls" to describe this game, but that is really only when you ignore so many resources that are almost in your way when completing the game. With the dilemma of catering to multiple audiences, being kids and younger adults, the difficulty and challenge that the game wants to show gets shot in the foot.
I have tried to ignore upgrades as much as possible in the past, which leads to a more difficult experience, but also a more time consuming process defeating enemies, which is a shame. Possibly in the future, I'll see if a balanced, challenging run of this game can be achieved. For now, I'll lay this game to rest.
