I started a coding project to remove the slowdown from Sebastian Mihai's 2011 homebrew game Neo Thunder. This is just a test of using all 380 sprites (32 background tiles, 2 player ship sprites, 21 player bullets, 155 enemies, 170 enemy bullets).
There is a slight jerk on the video, it's do with syncing issues (Neo Geo frame frate of 59.2hz to 60hz). It's smooth when running in MAME provided you select 1.03 or 1.02 MAME Emulation speed (to sync with a 60hz display).
