What is a Neapolitan chord?
A Neapolitan chord is a major triad built on the lowered second scale degree of the tonality. The Neapolitan chord is predominantly written in its first inversion forming the Neapolitan Sixth chord.
The origins of the Neapolitan chord is not clear, although it is thought that its popularity comes from the 17th and 18th century composers of the Neapolitan School.
In tonal harmony, the Neapolitan chord is often used as a pre-dominant chord preceding an authentic cadence. Due to its non-diatonic notes, the Neapolitan chord has a unique and distinct sound, giving it a powerful and dramatic effect.
In this example, the Neapolitan chord is shown as preparation to an authentic cadence in the tonality of C major:
