Is it REALLY true that Neanderthals make Young Earth Creation impossible? Donny Budinsky and Dr. Jerry Bergman respond!
Critics of Young Earth Creation (such as Gutsick Gibbon) make the false assumption that the cranial morphology of Adam and Eve looked like the average modern human of today. It is perfectly reasonable to believe Adam and Eve (and the Pre-Flood humans in general) had differences in their morphology when compared to extant humans. The reality is we don’t know what Adam and Eve looked like, nor do we know exactly what Noah and his family looked like. They may have looked closer to the Heidelbergensis phenotype.
If Pre-Flood humans (and immediate Post-Flood) lived for hundreds of years, there had to be something different about them. They lived in different environments. We know environment—due to epigenetics—has profound effects on morphology. Some evolutionary scientists admit that Neanderthals are fully human (they are us) but adapted to a cold eco-glacial environment.
It's logical to believe the genetic variability (primarily due to designed diversity) for robust and gracile humans was present in Noah and his family (ultimately derived from Adam and Eve), or at least the potential for its expression in their offspring. This means Noah and his family would have most likely looked like something between "ancient" human and extant human (robust and gracile).
If Noah and his family were morphologically heterogenous or diverse, then the features seen in robust humans and modern extant humans can be explained. Yes--Neanderthals are highly inbred and contain many stretches of DNA that are homozygous. This doesn't mean Noah and his family were homozygous. A small group probably broke off from the human population (that was largely heterozygous) shortly after the Flood (or at Babel). From there, they become isolated, inbred, and homozygous.
The dispersal at Babel would see different groups of people taking subsets of the variation (both genetic and morphological) into different parts of the globe where they become isolated. As the people groups migrated away from Babel, the many variants of humans (classified by evolutionists as Homo erectus, Homo heidelbergensis, Neanderthals and ‘modern’ humans), arose through a combination of genetic variation in bony characters and local environmental factors in a similar way that other ‘racial’ characteristics of people groups became established. As time went by some traits became dominant in some people groups, likely through genetic drift and/or inbreeding, but absent or close to absent in others. Hence, some of the more ‘extreme’ robust features may represent robust human groups that became very specialized.
There appears to have been subsequent interbreeding between the different people groups (e.g., Dragon Man). This interbreeding resulted in a smorgasbord of robust and gracile features in the same individual.
