![[Murder Rounds] The Sixteen-Year Shift: Charles Cullen, Part 1
โ ๏ธ Murder Rounds is a true crime podcast about healthcares deadliest killers written and reviewed by the nurses at NURSING.com. Listener discretion advised.
Charles Cullen worked at nine hospitals in sixteen years. He was never hidden. He was passed along.
In June 2003, a Catholic priest recovering from pneumonia died at a New Jersey hospital with a lethal level of a cardiac drug in his blood. He wasnt the first. Administrators there were already quietly reviewing a cluster of deaths on that unit โ and had been for weeks.
By then Cullen had been investigated at multiple hospitals, fired outright from several, named by a victims family, named by his own colleagues, reported to a state nursing board, and investigated by a county prosecutor. Every institutional exit had the same design: remove the problem from this building, keep the reference neutral, file the report into the channel where it will sit. Nobody lied, exactly. Everybody stopped at the edge of their own liability.
In this episode: the resignation letter that closed a contaminated-IV investigation ยท Helen Deans son, who stood in a hallway and spent eight years telling people what he knew ยท what a nurse found inside a sharps container at Saint Lukes ยท the thirty-one days between a prosecutor closing his file and a priest dying ยท and the reference call that, it turns out, nobody ever made
The Chart Review: the neutral reference, the law New Jersey named after him โ including the criticisms nurses still have of it twenty years on โ and why the dispensing cabinet caught what nine hospitals didnt.
