Kinetics and the Navigational Mind: Mind as Bodily Movement
(This is a general introduction before we go into the phenomenological history and resources.)
In this first video on kinetics in a “navigational approach” to mind, the speaker argues that mind (cognition, thought, memory, feeling) is fundamentally bodily movement: life is “minding” as it moves to continue living, not a separate thing stuck in the skull. They propose that navigation through physical space and through emotional, conceptual, temporal, and relational “landscapes” involves the same kind of wayfinding, shaped by habits and regularities that the body builds through ongoing encounters with the environment. Drawing on neuroscience of the hippocampus as a “cognitive map,” including place cells (O’Keefe) and links to memory (H.M.), they suggest mind is embodied and ecological, and that changing environment and bodily states (light, water, walking, dancing, new activities) can help shift cognitive paths.
