Welcome to another episode of How Could I Know? with hosts Patti Durand and Chris Corbett of Brightrack Consulting!

On this episode, the hosts sit down with Amanda Hammell, senior manager on the farm management consulting team at MNP and owner-operator of a dairy and beef operation in Bruce County, Ontario. Hammell shares her personal journey through farm succession, restarting a operation, and balancing off-farm advisory work with farm management.

You'll hear how Hammell has navigated corporate farm ownership versus being independent when starting out, to communication breakdowns, and through to acknowledging the different ways people get to a shared goal.

Hammell also shares how her and her husband got their start in dairy, sharing some of the tough financial realities of 100 per cent debt-financed farm growth and operations. She shares about the importance of farm advisors, objective financial oversight, and active succession planning and how that all works while navigating personal bandwidth limits on-farm.
