Natsuki Subaru’s latest loop in Re:Zero has split the community, sparking controversy and even causing some fans to drop the series. Spoilers ahead. Arc 9 began over a year ago with Subaru sealed by Al, whose goal was to erase him from existence. Since then, Al has been using his own looping ability while the rest of the cast fights to stop him, leading to massive reveals, shocking moments, and deep character development.

But the newest chapters changed everything. Petra lost her memories, Satella vanished, Reinhard broke Subaru’s seal, and Rem ultimately killed Subaru after regaining the truth about Return by Death. This sent Subaru back to the start of Arc 9, erasing over a year and a half of story progress. Subaru flipped the script by sealing Al instead, resetting four to five volumes of events and character growth.

Despite the backlash, trust Tappei, this reset was planned, and it sets up the next phase of the story while staying true to the nature of Re:Zero.
