The Panzerbataillon 393 is intensively preparing for a potential emergency on NATO's eastern flank. They are utilizing the modern Leopard 2 A7V battle tank for these exercises. The soldiers are training at the Oberlausitz training area, with camouflage and deception playing a central role.
A total of 14 Leopard tanks are being used for the exercise, which is part of the rapid response force. This unit is ready to deploy within five days of a potential attack. The events in Ukraine have significantly increased the importance of this exercise. The soldiers are using the Leopard 2 A7V, an impressive battle tank.
During the exercise, we accompanied the staff sergeant who serves as a tank commander on the Leopard 2 A7V. The technical maintenance of the tanks and the servicing of the recovery tank are crucial.
The soldiers must cope with sleep deprivation and high pressure. Communication and supplying the tanks with ammunition are of paramount importance.
The soldiers are highly motivated and have the opportunity to conduct live firing during the exercise. Forest fires temporarily interrupted the exercise, as the safety of the environment took precedence.
