Trail of Lightning by Rebecca Roanhorse is an Urban Fantasy novel heavily inspired by Native American Folklore.
Our protagonist Maggie is the type to fight her way through her problems, which I guess is a good thing because people generally don't like her. She's trying to do some good, but the way she accomplishes her goals is through violence. So of course I found her easy to root for.
Her sidekick Kai is her polar opposite, he charms his way through problems and everyone likes good guy Kai.
I don't want to make it sound like Trail of Lightning is a book with non-stop action, because it's not. Much of the story is Maggie and Kai traveling around, finding clues and getting into trouble, and it's great.
The dynamic between our protagonists is engaging enough that you don't really need a big bad. There are several antagonists and one in particular is more important than the rest, but the focus of the story is totally on Maggie and her internal struggle, which I enjoyed.
Trial of Lightning sticks the landing. It gave everything I could want out of a first book in a series.
You should pick this up if you want to read a protagonist that thinks she needs to physically fight through all her problems or if you just want to read a good urban fantasy influenced by Native American folklore.
