At WinterFest, Virginia’s premier holiday celebration, one of the most spectacular aspects of the event is the International Street Fountain being transformed into Snow Flake Lake, a 22,400-square-foot ice rink. Snow Flake Lake is one of the largest ice-skating rinks in the United States and takes close to 16,400 gallons of water to fill.
Some other facts about Snow Flake Lake:
It takes 600 tons of cooling to freeze the rink, equivalent to approximately 1,700 blow dryers all on high for the same KW usage
The buildout took almost a year to manufacture
There are four miles of aluminum beams that support the plywood subfloor
There are two layers of ¾” plywood, 1,500 sheets that make up the subfloor
191,000 lbs. of steel to make up the scaffolding
To highlight this amazing work, we had the opportunity to invite two professional skaters to check out the rink for themselves, and they were impressed, to say the least. The Livingston Family are from Northern Virginia, and their two girls - Everly and Alydia - have been competing nationally.
