This #WorldOceansDay, we highlight the vital work of our friends at National Geographic Pristine Seas. Since 2008, National Geographic Pristine Seas has helped create 31 of the world’s largest marine protected areas, covering 6.9 million square kilometers of ocean. These “national parks of the sea” restore marine life while increasing food security, strengthening economies, and building climate resilience.
National Geographic Pristine Seas is more than halfway through their five-year Global Expedition in the remote tropical Pacific, where they are working alongside governments, local communities, and organizations to help safeguard the ocean through the creation of marine reserves.
National Geographic Explorer in Residence Enric Sala, founder of Pristine Seas, reminds us of our daily connection to the marine world: "To me, every day is World Oceans Day, not just today. Every day we should be giving thanks to what makes our life on this planet possible."
