When Natalie and Ian were writing this piece, they were in a film noir phase and were watching lots of old Hitchcock movies. When Ian showed Natalie the music, she was struck by the beautiful purity of the melody but also the slight eeriness of the musical themes as the song progressed, which led her to paint a scene of isolation and longing. Natalie loosely based her lyrics on the premise of the Hitchcock movie “Rear Window”, where the protagonist observes the secret dramas of his neighbors through the rear window of his apartment.
