Nat Turner's Rebellion 1831: The Uprising That Shook Virginia. In August 1831, enslaved preacher Nat Turner led the deadliest slave uprising in U.S. history in Southampton County, Virginia. Over 48 hours, Turner’s armed followers killed nearly 60 White people. The revolt was swiftly crushed, but it triggered massive retaliation and entrenched pro-slavery policies across the South. The Spark and the Uprising. The Leader: Nat Turner was a literate, deeply religious enslaved man who believed God had chosen him to lead his people out of bondage. The Uprising: On August 21, 1831, Turner and a small group of followers killed his enslaver, Joseph Travis, and his family. The group moved from farm to farm, ultimately growing to roughly 60–75 followers and killing at least 55 White men, women, and children. The Suppression: The rebels aimed to reach the county seat of Jerusalem (now Courtland, Virginia) to seize an armory, but were met and defeated by armed White civilians and local militia. The Aftermath and Retaliation. The Manhunt: Turner successfully eluded capture for two months before being discovered in a hiding place on October 30, 1831. He was tried, convicted, and hanged on November 11, 1831.The Retaliation: In the hysterical climate following the rebellion, White militias and mobs murdered an estimated 100 to 200 Black people, many of whom had absolutely no connection to the uprising. The Trials: The state of Virginia executed 56 Black individuals accused of taking part in the insurrection. Historical Legacy and Impact Legislation: The uprising struck profound fear into the White Southern population. In response, the Virginia legislature and other Southern states passed strict new laws prohibiting the education of enslaved and free Black people, restricting their right to assemble, and requiring White ministers at all Black worship services. National Divide: The rebellion ended any realistic debates about gradual emancipation in Virginia and deepened the sectional divide that would eventually lead to the American Civil War.
