NASCAR needs sponsorship to sustain itself. That's what it got with Nextel when they chose to sponsor the NASCAR Cup Series, which would be the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series and the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series in its run. During that run, they also tried to be the exclusive telecommunications. s company. Excluding all providers, though they would grandfather in Cingular's sponsorship with Richard Childress Racing and Alltel's Sponsorship with Penske Racing. Where controversy would come into fruition was when Cingular Wireless rebranded into AT&T, after the SBC Communications Corp acquired AT&T Inc. Leading to an ugly legal battle when they tried to change their logo on Jeff Burton's Chevrolet Impala.
