Meet NASA’s newest, most powerful supercomputer: Athena
Donovan Mathias, Chief of the NASA Advanced Supercomputing Division gives us an inside look at Athena at the Modular Supercomputing Facility at our Silicon Valley center. Athena is designed to support a new generation of research—simulating rocket launches, modeling next-generation aircraft, and training large-scale artificial intelligence foundation models to uncover new scientific insights.
The supercomputer works seamlessly with NASA's hyperwall, turning massive amounts of data into high resolution visualizations that span across a 300 square foot display with over a billion pixels. As part of the agency’s high-end computing resources, Athena will deliver more computing power than any other NASA system.
