In this exciting engineering design and technology demonstration contest, NASA challenges university students to design, build, and test prototype systems capable of extracting water from simulated Martian subsurface ice. Accessing water is crucial for humans to survive on other worlds! It begins by designing analog missions with paths-to-flight that can harvest water frozen below the surface of Mars. Through their technology demonstrations on earth and a submission of robust technical papers that describe essential modifications required to operate their systems on Mars, Mars Ice Challenge teams are actively engaging in NASA’s mission to improve In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) capabilities on Mars.
