I was recently at the Kennedy Space Center #KSC in Cape Canaveral, Florida, where I encountered NASA's two original crewed spaceflight modules- the Mercury and Gemini Vehicles, which launched into space aboard repurposed intercontinental ballistic missiles! These vehicles, which launched from right here in Cape Canaveral, were integral in developing the technology and practicing the manoeuvres necessary for the upcoming Apollo Programme, which some years later orbited the moon and landed astronauts on its surface.

Far beyond the reaches of the four rocky planets, we find our Solar Systems showpiece worlds- the two gas giants, Jupiter and Saturn. As the two largest planets, both are tantalising targets for probes exploring the planetary neighbourhood. But both lie significantly farther from the sun than the Earth and its terrestrial neighbours. But in the early 1970s, the technology for deep space voyages was primed, and missions to both Jupiter and Saturn ensued. Those missions make up the topic of our video today, in this second episode of our trilogy of Probes that Studied the Solar System.

KIC 8462852... that is the official name of a star located 1,400 light years away, discovered by the Kepler Telescope on its 4-year mission when it revealed over 120,000 new planets and stars. This star however is not like any star ever discovered before, thanks to its cyclic drops in luminosity. While it is commonplace for orbiting planets to dim stars by 1-2%; KIC 846, now nicknamed Tabbys Star, has been dropping by up to 22%. Many theories have surfaced, including gas clouds, comets and even collisions... but all natural possibilities have been ruled out, leaving only one remaining idea... could an alien species be responsible for the single massive object experiencing ongoing change? It sounds like a ludicrous theory but... there is more science behind this theory, and the idea of what the aliens are doing that we just cant rule out. Today, on Out of this World, we are going to be analysing this star, its trends, the theories, and just what might be responsible for this mystery that has baffled scientists for years.

On April 10th, astronomers revealed the first ever photograph of a distant supermassive black hole, specifically showing the fabled Event Horizon, the pitch-black structure beyond which nothing in the universe can escape it. This black hole is the god of a supergiant elliptical galaxy 5* bigger than the Milky Way, and is located over 50M light years away. With breakthroughs like this achieved, mankind will turn its attention to focusing more of these ponsters, and pondering the questions and answers they unlock.
