Celebrating Ten Years of Efforts Towards Observing Precipitation

The NASA Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Mission, which was launched on February 27th, 2014 as a US-Japan joint mission, is an international network of satellites that provides next-generation global observations of rain and snow. The GPM satellite is continuing its observations well after launch, and marked its 10th anniversary on February 27, 2024. Through advanced instrumentations that result in improved measurements of precipitation globally, the GPM mission is not only increasing our scientific knowledge of Earth's water and energy cycles, but also extending to numerous societal benefits, for example, utilization in operational weather forecasts, development of global rainfall products for improved situational awareness of extreme events, and incorporation in hydrological models that support flood, water resource and crop management activities, among others.

Join us as the GPM Team celebrates 10 years of precipitation observations, reflecting on significant achievements of the mission. This video provides perspectives of engineering, scientific, and societal applications achievements obtained by the GPM Mission from the following invited speakers: Dr. Karen M. St. Germain (NASA Earth Science Division Director), Dr. Chris Kummerow (Colorado State University), Dr. George Huffman (NASA GPM Project Scientist), Dr. Yukari N. Takayabu (JAXA GPM Project Scientist), Dr. Scott Braun (NASA AOS Project Scientist), Dr. Ramesh Kakar (Retired NASA Program Manager and GPM Program Scientist), Steven Neeck (Retired NASA Deputy Associate Director and Flight Programs, Earth Science Division), Dr. Robert Adler (University of Maryland), Dr. Chris Kidd (NASA GSFC/ University of Maryland College Park), Dr. Courtney Schumacher (Texas A&M University), Dr. Claire Pettersen (University of Michigan), Dr. Dalia Kirschbaum (Director of Earth Science Division at NASA GSFC), and Dr. Faisal Hossain (University of Washington).
