NB: Some Italians might object that the word "fiction" actually exists in the language. I would argue that A) its most common signified remains something that has nothing to do with literature ("fiction" is used to talk of TV series, and series of a certain type/genre at that); B) in those contexts where fiction is used to refer to the same thing we talk about in English, the term is simply borrowed from the English for lack of a better one. That doesn't mean that it has seeped and taken roots in the Italian language at all.
