The Difference Between Logic/Systems Thinking and Narrative Cognition/Storythinking

What is the difference between logic/systems thinking and narrative cognition/storythinking? It all comes down to how the human brain differentiates between what is and what could happen.

This video explores the two complementary types of intelligence that evolved in the human brain:
🧠 Logic-based thinking—which relies on patterns, equations, and spatial reasoning to analyze stable, high-data environments.
📖 Storythinking (Narrative Cognition)—which focuses on causes, mechanisms, and action to strategize in volatile, low-data environments.

From early neurons that processed ON/OFF survival signals to the development of imaginative foresight, the human brain evolved not only to compute but to speculate on future possibilities. This “could happen” thinking sets humans apart from artificial intelligence, which depends on pre-existing data and symbolic logic rather than causal reasoning.

Drawing from the book, "Narrative Creativity: An Introduction to How and Why” by Angus Fletcher and Mike Benveniste, this video explains:
✅ Why storythinking is an essential tool for leadership, innovation, and problem-solving.
✅ The difference between causation (narrative) and correlation (logic) in decision-making.
✅ How systems thinking and logic function in structured, predictable environments, while narrative cognition thrives in uncertainty.
✅ Why modern creativity training emphasizes symbolic logic, unintentionally neglecting the unique human capacity for imaginative and narrative creativity.
✅ Why AI will never achieve narrative creativity due to the mechanical limitations of computing hardware.

To build a truly innovative and resilient future, we must embrace storytelling, theater, literature, and human intelligence—not just data and algorithms.
