In the year of 1921 Naomi Parker Fraley was born on August 26. She grew up during the booming 20s in America into the depression of the 30s. When she turned 20, America had joined World War II and she went on to become a war worker along with a waitress, as many women did to keep their families afloat. During this time she modeled for the outfits of the workforce that the women had to wear as a war worker and you may recognize her for some of her pictures that are still shown in schools of her working in a factory making airplanes for the war. These pictures caught the eyes of many including artist J. Howard Miller the famous artist of the Rosie the Riveter(c.1943) picture, though never confirmed due to the artist dying in in the mid 1980s. Naomi when looking at the picture said that she had thought it looked like her, but thought it was more of a mental idea, thinking that most women saw themselves as Rosie.
Naomi was never given credit for her role in inspiring the poster and it wasn’t revealed she was the inspiration for the poster until much later in her life, specifically at the age of 94 in 2016 when researcher James J. Kimble had reached out to Fraley and wanted to tell her side of the story.
Naomi’s fame was short lived due to her passing on January 20, 2018. She is an inspiration to women everywhere and is one of the most recognizable faces in the feminist movements of all time.
She deserves more time in the spotlight though she has passed on. I didn’t see much about her passing and only found out about her yesterday (3/4/2018) and am happy she got the recognition she deserved after so long.
