An original commissioned piece inspired by the famous Chinese love story, the Butterfly Lovers (梁山伯與祝英台). The story goes such that Yingtai was a daughter of the Zhu Family of Shangyu, and despite being a woman, went against tradition and wished to pursue a scholarly path. She managed to convince her father to allow her to attend classes disguised as a man, and met Liang Shanbo, a scholar from Kuaiji. They had a strong affinity for one another and studied together as sworn brothers for the next three years, in which Zhu Yingtai fell in love with Liang Shanbo.
However, one day receiving an urgent letter from her father requesting her return, Zhu Yingtai had to part ways with Liang Shanbo, vowing in her heart to be with him for eternity. Months later, when Liang visits the Zhu Estate, he discovers the true identity of Zhu Yingtai and they confess their love, devoting themselves to one another. However, their happy reunion is short-lived as they soon find out that Zhu’s parents have already betrothed Zhu Yingtai to a wealthy merchant, Ma Wencai. Liang Shanbo is heartbroken and his health deteriorates until he eventually succumbs to illness during his office as a County Magistrate.
On the day of the wedding, strong winds prevent the procession from moving past where Liang Shanbo’s grave sat, and Zhu Yingtai weeps bitterly as she knelt to pay respects to her lost love. Suddenly, the grave opened with a clap of thunder and Zhu Yingtai did not hesitate to throw herself in, joining Liang Shanbo. Their spirits then emerge as a pair of butterflies, never to be separated again. Hence, in Chinese culture, the Butterfly symbolizes both the ephemeral nature of life and the cycle of life.
