But if you’re judging your image on a tiny 3-inch camera screen, are you actually making better visual choices, or just guessing?
In this video, we break down why built-in camera screens fail solo shooters, how display size impacts shot composition, and why proper monitoring tools like False Color, Waveforms, and custom 3D LUT previews can transform your workflow on set.
We also take a hands-on look at the Neewer F700 7-inch 2000-nit field monitor to see if adding an external display to your rig is actually worth the extra bulk and battery management.
Whether you shoot on a hybrid mirrorless body or a cinema camera, this guide will help you decide if a dedicated display upgrade is right for your setup.

As well as going over all the benefits you get from using a matte box in general, this video will cover a couple of things unique to the BMPCC line of cameras because I've always felt that the BMPCC 4K & 6K have a couple of problems that you need to find a solution to if you want to get the best out of them.

A good video monitor is an essential accessory in any filmmakers kit. In this video I give my thoughts about the new Hollyland MARS M1 monitor. Which isn't just a good video monitor but is also a wireless video transmitter and receiver in one! Wireless video is very popular at the moment so it's interesting to have a monitor that combines three pieces of kit into one... but is it any good?
The Mars M1 functions as an all-in-one transmitter, receiver, and monitor solution. You can switch between the transmitter and receiver modes on the monitoring screen. One transmitter can work with up to two receivers or four mobile apps. The Mars M1 can be used together with the Mars Pro and 4K series to reduce the number of devices required for a more efficient shooting experience.
The Mars M1 is designed with a 5.5" touch LCD screen featuring up to 1,000 nits of brightness. Professional colour calibration is performed during manufacturing, and multiple-level colour temperature adjustments are available. The screen supports the Rec. 709 colour gamut for excellent colour rendition. Five selectable 3D LUT presets are available for transferring colours to the monitor.

That would be pretty cool, right?
ATTENTION! Things have changed from what I said in the video. Joel has reached out and offered a 15% discount if you use the following link and enter 'Chris15' at checkout: bit.ly/3Bi89r4
Well, that's what Phantom LUT's are all about. Created by Joel Famularo, an Australian cinematographer, these LUTs are designed to accurately mimic the colour science that Arri is so well known. You can get them for several different camera but in this video I'll be talking about the Blackmagic ones.
* In the video i said that the Alexa footage I've seen is a little greener than the LUTs. Joel has pointed out that only the original Alexa Classic has this green look and that the newer LF, Mini, etc... have less of a green look, even though they use the same sensor.
* Joel didn't update the LUTs to remove any magenta, rather the were two sets of the LUT's, one for solo operators and one for multi cam. I'll let Joel explain:
"When I released the update for the LUTs a few months back, it wasn't exactly that I reduced magenta in the LUTs. What I did was remove the versions that had a magenta boost. There used to be the Multicam and Default versions that existed parallel to each other - so 2 versions. The Default had a magenta boost to correct what I thought was a native green cast in the Pocket 4 and 6k cameras for solo operator use whereas the Multicam were completely 'clean' in the sense they had zero tint or white balance adjustments - only the colour emulation which makes colour matching possible between cameras I support and the Alexa itself. I deleted the Default and made the Multicam the single version - so a completely 'clean' version. So when you say you feel the LUTs are 'too magenta', that's not actually the LUTs as they take what the camera gives them and alter the colours alone but nothing globally like tint/wb. My advice would be to boost the green in camera if you find the image too magenta by setting a permanent +5 or +10 green shift on the WB control in camera."
And final I should say, that of course, there are other differences between an Arri Alexa and a BMPCC other than colour - the main one being dynamic range - but I still feel that these LUT's bring you closer to that magical look than ever before.

Many cinema cameras need huge rigs and a multitude of accessories just to be able to work.
Having said that, I still think there are a few must have accessories to get the best out of the BMPCC 4K.

At first I thought I’d broken it somehow. However, after some investigation I think I have found out what is behind it.
I think having gyro stabilisation in the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Cameras is a great addition, but it’s also important to understand it’s limitations so we can use it more effectively.

The most exciting was the inclusion of gyro stabilization for the camera. This means you can now use the gyro meta data to improve post stabilization.

Over all the BMPCC 6K Pro is a fantastic cinema camera. For the money, you can’t beat it!
*About sensor read-out speeds — It’s hard to find any official stats for read-out speed for cameras. The speeds I give here are my best guess after compiling a number of unofficial tests carried out by a number of websites. I’m pretty happy with the quoted BMPCC 6K Pro read-out speed and the Sony A7s iii, I quote a speed of 6ms for the Alexa, this is the most popular opinion I can find online but some claim that newer models ( like the Alexa mini shown in the video) have a speed of 4ms or even 2ms) Whatever the true speeds are, the Alexa is the fastest and the BMPCC 6K Pro the slowest.

You don’t have to have your Canon EOS R setup exactly the same way I do but hopefully you’ll get something out of this video. Even if it’s just that have custom buttons set up is a good idea.
The little start button is called the AE lock button!
Here's what canon says about it - "The AE Lock function allows you to lock your exposure settings, and continue shooting without your ISO, Aperture, and Shutter Speeds constantly readjusting as you recompose your shot. The AE Lock button on Canon EOS cameras is denoted with a * symbol and is placed within easy reach of your right-hand thumb."
