ONE A BIT UNCOMFORTABLE THING IS... - NOVA Paragliders CODEX Test & Review Flybubble Paragliding 2024-06-17 | Nova Paragliders CODEX review after few months of paragliding in a wide variety of conditions in Colombia and the UK. Carlo did most of his testing of the CODEX (size S) over several epic flying days in Colombia, and then some more on some good paragliding days back in the UK. Nancy tested the CODEX in her size (XS) in the UK.The CODEX is an EN C certified 2-liner with 65 cells and a modest aspect ratio of 6.1 flat. What is ASPECT RATIO in Paragliding Flybubble Paragliding 2024-06-08 | Paragliding Aspect Ratio - What is it and why is it important? If you are a beginner paragliding pilot or an experienced pilot, this video will explain aspect ratio and help you understand how it affects wings performance, handling, safety,... Aspect ratio is the ratio of the wingspan* to the average chord** of the wing, which affects the glider's performance, behaviour and stability. Simply: a long, narrow paragliding wing has a high aspect ratio, whereas a short, wide wing has a low aspect ratio. Aspect ratio is often used to predict the aerodynamic efficiency of a wing because the lift-to-drag ratio (glide ratio) increases with aspect ratio, improving speed and overall performance.Aspect ratio also has an important effect on the handling of a wing, but perhaps not as you might expect! Actually, purely having a higher aspect ratio makes a wing less manoeuvrable, slower and harder to turn. Assuming equal pilot skill, a pilot on a lower aspect ratio wing should easily outmanoeuvre a pilot on a higher aspect ratio wing. This is very noticeable on days with very narrow thermals: the pilots on lower aspect ratio wings can more easily turn tight enough to stay in the lift, whereas the pilot on the higher aspect ratio has a much harder time! This is an unhappy compromise which more performance-oriented pilots tend to have to accept when prioritising highest performance. Of course the wing designers will do what they can to improve the handling of higher aspect ratio paragliding wings! Everyone faced collapses! - How Did The ZOOM X2C Do? I Paraglider TEST & REVIEW Flybubble Paragliding 2024-05-26 | Paragliding pilots were throwing the reserves and getting collapses BUT how was the ZOOM X2C? Carlo has tested the ZOOM X2C in two sizes over a period of around 4 months, in the UK and in Colombia paragliding hot spot. He's flown them for more than 40 hours, spread over around a dozen days with variable conditions. Carlo tested the sizes 95 and 105 with various paragliding harnesses, mostly to vary his all-up weight. He flew the smaller size 95 with the mid-weight AirDesign The Sock, and lightweight Niviuk Arrow P and Woody Valley Race pod harnesses. He flew the larger size 105 with mid-weight Supair EVO LITE 2 with speedbag add-on and Niviuk Arrow, and the heavier Advance IMPRESS 4 pod harness. 2.5 LINER vs 2 LINER - Which One Is Better? I BGD LYNX 2 Test & Review Flybubble Paragliding 2024-05-20 | BGD LYNX 2 Paraglider Test & Review. The LYNX 2 is a lightweight sports class wing from BGD. It's a two and a half liner, which means that from front to back it has three line sets in the middle (A, B and C) and two line sets at the tips (A and B). With a moderate aspect ratio for a sports class wing, 6.2, the LYNX 2 is certified EN C, using folding lines.What the heck is a hybrid 2.5 liner anyway? ;-)A 3 liner has 3 rows of main lines front to back -A, B and C.A 2 liner has 2 rows front to back, A and B.A 2.5 liner has a 3 line layout in the centre of the wing and 2 lines at the tips.So why in the sky did BGD choose to make the LYNX 2 a 2.5 liner EN C wing, rather than a 2 liner EN C, which seems to be all the rage at the moment? A 2.5 liner requires less rods to retain chordwise structural stability, making it lighter, more compact and easier to pack. BGD believes the Lynx 2's line layout also offers a wider brake range, better tolerance of low speeds, and more forgiving stall behaviour. They also feel it's also generally easier and safer to launch, ground handle and fly, compared to a 2 liner.Comparisons with other wingsBoth in Colombia and the UK I had the opportunity to fly closely with many different wings, of all levels. Compared to other wings I've tested and flown against… I feel the LYNX 2 has a noticeable performance advantage in terms of glide and speed over even the best-performing current high B wings - the IOTA DLS, Ikuma 3, MENTOR 7, Rush 6 and MAESTRO 2.Quite similar performance overall to the best performing current EN C 3 and 2.5 liners - the SIGMA 11, CURE 2, Artik 6, Delta 4, CAYENNE6, SAVAGE and Queen 3.Quite similar also to the Volt 4, Bonanza 3, CODEX and MINT, but I feel these may have a slight advantage when fully accelerated.I feel the best performing EN C 2 liners I've tested - the Artik R, Photon, SCALA 2, X2C and Volt 5 - have a noticeable performance advantage, even at trim but especially accelerated.In terms of handling, compared with other sports class wings, to give an idea, I found the Lynx 2 more agile than the CURE 2, Delta 4, SAVAGE, CAYENNE6, Volt 4, CODEX, MINT, Photon and Volt 5. It has similar agility to the Bonanza 3 and Queen 3. Not quite as agile as the SIGMA 11, ALLEGRO, Artik 6, Artik R, SCALA 2 and X2C.Who's it for? Pilots looking for a light yet durable, compact and easy-packing sports class wing with mid C pilot demands, very nice handling and excellent all-round XC performance. Suitable for pilots ready to upgrade from a high B wing.Pilots wanting to downgrade from a high C or D wing, still wanting excellent XC performance but choosing to shift their focus more on enjoyment, less on performance.Competitions?Although the Lynx 2 is not the out-and-out top performer in the serial class it offers excellent handling and performance - including good speed - and lower pilot demands than the top performers so it's a great wing for taking part in serial-class competitions like the SRS. If you're gunning to win you might do it on the Lynx but if you wanted to put all your ducks in your favour then you'd have to fly one of the top performing EN C 2-liners, whether you wanted to or not. Since they're not excluded, you might have to get a torpedo harness too, whether you wanted to or not. ARE YOU STRUGGLING To Get Into Your Pod? TRY THIS SIMPLE TRICK Flybubble Paragliding 2024-04-05 | TRY THIS SIMPLE TRICK TO GET INTO YOUR POD Paragliding HARNESS LIKE A PRO! No more struggling close to the ground, wasting your paragliding time and risking an accident near the ground! Get into your pod as soon as possible and focus on catching the first thermal. About paragliding pod harnesses:Pod harnesses have a leg fairing - known as the speedbag, cocoon or pod - which encloses your legs, and the sitting position tends to be more reclined.Pods are best suited for ambitious cross country pilots or regular fliers with at least a year of flying experience. Although more difficult on the ground and more unstable in extreme situations, pod harnesses are comfortable and offer more performance during long flights. They keep you warmer and reduce drag while flying, but you carry a little extra weight and bulk on the way back (depending on models, comparing like for like).The reclined flying position takes some time to get used to. The lower karabiner position usually means more responsive handling (it feels more tippy), although this can be counteracted when a seatboardless design is used (which usually calms things down and makes a harness more wallowy). Turning requires a coordinated pressure on the footplate and seat area, and can often feel a bit awkward, one of the reasons why acro pilots favour the traditional upright harness with a seatboard. Pilots new to pods may find themselves being more unstable in rough air with more motion (yaw, pitch and roll) to contend with.The performance advantage is dependant on setting the harness up correctly, so it’s important to spend time adjusting the angle. When correctly balanced, a well-trimmed pod harness can provide the added secure feeling of being completely supported.In the past, pod harnesses were heavy and bulky, but modern designs have optimised the weight while retaining durability. You should expect a reputable harness to outlast your wing. However, when choosing the right harness you should pay attention to the fabric of the pod itself, as it is a high wear area where your boots drag on the speed bar and repeated leg extensions stretch the fairing.The lightweight models (3-5kg) are designed for pilots who want to keep the weight of their kit down but don't want to compromise other important aspects (e.g. protection, comfort and/or durability). Ultralight models (1.5-3kg) compromise some aspects to achieve stripped down minimalism for hike-and-fly racing, expeditions or regular travelling. The competition models feature a large aerodynamic fin at the rear (a lot of extra size for a small performance benefit), a place for a second reserve (mandatory for international level competitions) and ‘all the bells and whistles’. Expect to pay a penalty in weight and bulk for all the features. If your flying involves regular high level competition, it is a good match. The way a paragliding wing responds to our inputs depends on various weather conditions such as wind speed, wind direction, turbulence,… Flying in different conditions requires us, as paragliding pilots, to adjust our piloting techniques. For instance, the amount of brake pressure we apply for turning or flaring needs to be adapted. This is because using the same amount of brake pressure on a calm day and on a turbulent day would yield vastly different reactions from our wing.For example, if we typically need to pull our brakes 50cm deep to reach the stall point on a calm day, this measurement could be significantly less on a turbulent day. Consequently, our stall point could occur much faster in turbulent conditions. Adjusting our piloting techniques accordingly ensures safer flights! How To AVOID THIS HORSESHOE Paragliding Launch MISTAKE Flybubble Paragliding 2024-03-15 | How to avoid "horseshoe" paragliding take off fail. If your paragliding wing tends to rise with the tips first, forming a horseshoe shape, there are mainly two reasons for this occurrence. Firstly, your paraglider may inherently possess this tendency. Secondly, your wing might be set too straight on the ground. The solution involves placing your paragliding wing on the ground in a slight "U" or "C" shape. By pulling up the middle part of the wing, you encourage the middle to pop up and catch air first. Additionally, some pilots inadvertently exacerbate this issue by pulling the “outer" A risers - causing tips to lift first! So if you have split As - make sure you pull inner A risers (only or just more). We always say, take off is a very important stage of paragliding and it is important to be extremely focused! Starting with evenly spreading your wing in a slight "U" or “C” shape. Make sure there is no knots and twists in the lines. When you are positioned under the centre of your wing, you start running and pulling inner A risers. Never be aggressive! As the wing rises, make necessary adjustments by moving beneath the centre of your wing, adjust pulling force on As if needed, and use brake lines if required once the wing is above your head.If you have any extra tips, tricks or experiences to share, please do so in the comments below. Light paragliding wing that has been developed for hike and fly races like the Red Bull X-alps. How does it compare to its competitors?The SCALA 2 light is a light EN C 2 liner paraglider with flat aspect ratio 6.77 and 78 cells, certified EN C and LTF D (as LTF still doesn't allow folding lines for LTF C flight testing). Currently the SCALA 2 light is the lightest EN C certified 2 liner paraglider there is.Carlo tested the SCALA 2 light in size 19 (CWR 75-100 kg, SWR 75-95 kg, EWR 95-100 kg). He flew it with the Niviuk Arrow harness in size L, at all-up weights ranging from 90-95 kg.Carlo says: "For pilots looking for a top performing light EN C wing, there's currently nothing to match it. The next lightest is the AirDesign Volt 4 e.g. size S (80-92 kg) weighs 3.87 kg with the standard 12mm Aramid risers (3.74 kg with spaghetti-style Dyneema risers, which we're not fans of). But what's the Klimber 3 P like to launch and fly, and how does it really perform? Lets find out in this video! 🤓The Klimber 3 P was designed by Niviuk for advanced cross country flying and hike and fly racing competitions like the Red Bull X-Alps race.
