“When I was in elementary school, a teacher told me to stop disrupting her class with my movements and noises. Until that moment, my tics were just part of my life. They would cycle in and out every few months or so, and I would ride the waves like a surfboarder. From this moment on, I took great pains to hide my tics.
I've written about my TS experience for HuffPost, and I encourage you to check it out. Though it was the scariest writing I've ever published, it was also rewarding to finally tell my story, to stop hiding and own it.
I do not define myself in relation to my tics or my Tourette's. TS is a daily part of my life, but I am many things besides: a father, husband, writer, and literary translator of more than a dozen books. In 2024, I published my debut novel, The Book of Losman--about a literary translator in Copenhagen who wants to get to the root of his TS through his childhood memories. Yes, it's fiction, but you know what? When you spend a lifetime wondering why you tic, you can also find joy in the journey for answers.” - Kyle
