Julie Exline, Director of the Division of Perceptual Studies (DOPS) at the University of Virginia, explores some of humanity's biggest questions: What happens near death? Can meaningful coincidences, telepathy, and after-death communications reveal a deeper reality? In this fascinating conversation, she explains why mystical experiences—whether through meditation, near-death experiences, psychedelics, or even emerging technologies like virtual reality—so often leave people with the same powerful realization: we are profoundly interconnected. But the journey doesn't end with awe.

Julie shows how these transformative experiences can heal broken relationships, deepen forgiveness, rebuild trust, and inspire greater compassion in everyday life. Together we explore near-death life reviews, after-death communications, the wisdom of the body, and why love, empathy, and relationship—not fear—may be the true foundation of human flourishing. If you've ever wondered whether extraordinary experiences can help transform not only individual lives but Humanity itself, this episode offers hope, science, and a compelling vision of our shared future.

Julie Exline, Ph.D., is the Bonner-Lowry Professor of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences and the Director of the Division of Perceptual Studies, University of Virginia Health Systems. Before taking this position in July 2025, she spent 25 years on the Psychological Sciences faculty of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. She has extensive research programs on spiritual struggles and supernatural attributions, along with a broad interest in extraordinary experiences around the life/death boundary (e.g., after-death communications, near-death experiences, children’s memories of possible past lives). Dr. Exline is also a licensed clinical psychologist and certified spiritual director.
