A mystery affliction has killed at least 20 elephants in Kenya’s Amboseli National Park since June, with all of the animals exhibiting identical symptoms, including partial paralysis.
The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) says toxicology reports found high concentrations of cyanide in the animals' carcasses, suggesting possible pesticide poisoning from nearby farms' crops. However, some locals and specialists have rejected these claims as scavengers feeding on the carcasses have not died.
Elephant herds have made Amboseli a lucrative tourist hotspot and the mysterious deaths in the region are a sensitive issue in a country where tourism is a huge source of revenue.
