Senior librarian Greg Gerrard unboxes a surprising gem from the Coles Myer collection: parts of the ornate pneumatic tubing system that was used inside Myers flagship store during the the early-to-mid 20th century.
Through the 20th century the bourgeoning retail sector of department stores required a way to move cash, receipts and memos around their growing premises. Myer's solution was to install over 40 miles of pneumatic tubing in their Bourke St store in order to keep up with the growing pace of business.
