It can be weirdly demoralizing to hear a finished song that sounds perfect… and then sit down in your own room and think, “I could never do that.”
But the truth is: that song wasn’t finished before it started.
In this video, I’m writing a new track from scratch with Motel 6 “We’ll Leave the Light On For You” vibes — wide-open middle America, emotionally neutral, plainspoken… not happy or sad, just human.
I’m building the track using instruments I haven’t touched in a while (mandolin + dobro), chasing simplicity and feel, and treating the “imperfections” as part of the point. I also put Hunter Rogerson’s Hearth & Hollow Folk Accordion to a real test for the first time — and it sounds ridiculous in the best way.
And yes… I used Soft Drums (my quiet brush drum library) because this is exactly why I made it: gentle, not jazzy, and still felt when you mute it. Writing A Simple, Timeless & Human Track](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/f288GfjyG9I/mqdefault.jpg)
