In this video, I compare two very special PRS Silver Sky Core USA models—my original 2018 model and the 2021 Roxy Pink. Both of these guitars were generous gifts from John Mayer, and they each have their own unique character and feel.
The 2018 Model: We look at the original specs, including the smaller vintage-style frets and the thinner neck profile. I'll demonstrate its clear, transparent "hi-fi" tone that has so much clarity and funkiness.
The 2021 Roxy Pink: I share the story of receiving this guitar on its release day and explore the changes PRS made, such as the larger "medium jumbo" frets and the noticeably beefier neck. You’ll hear its deeper, rounder, and more "hollow" sound.
Tone Comparisons: I play both guitars through my setup (with a little help from my One Control reverb) so you can hear the differences in the pickups and resonance for yourself.
Tips & Tricks: I show a quick trick for stretching strings and how to use a coin to pull string ends if you don’t have a cutter handy!
I also spend some time playing through a 55 BPM blues challenge and discuss the importance of internalizing song forms for better improvisation.
