The video opening for my Midwest Gaming Classic Afterparty Live Set was a tribute to one of my favorite games, Streets of Rage 2. It was also a tribute to Yuzo Koshiro, who has had a massive influence on some of my music.
Unfortunately, due to a technical issue, the video was unable to be played during the opening of my set, and I had to call an audible to skip it to keep things moving.
I wanted to retool the intro for tomorrow's Club Rezz performance, but there is too much time involved to rework everything to make it work. Rather than completely shelving it, I figured I'd put it out there online for people to see it.
I spent a lot of time re-programming the Streets of Rage 2 ROM to make both the text and graphical changes happen. Believe it or not, this modified intro plays on real Sega Genesis hardware! All of the actual footage was recorded from my Model 1 Sega Genesis, into a capture card.
As Streets of Rage 2 fans know, the original intro was not narrated and was purely a text scroll with music. I was concerned that not everyone at the After Party would be able to see the screen, so I opted to add some narration in post-production. The text also scrolls pretty fast in the game, so some video trickery was used to slow down the text to prevent the narration from trailing off too much.
The Unleaded Logic logo was fun to do in 16 bit and the other additional graphics and text changes have some interesting easter eggs to them. Can you spot them all? Right after the character select screen was when I would start performing a "Storm In Neo Kyoto."
I hope all of you enjoy this little homage to a classic game. I had such a fun time making it and really wish it could have been a part of the show.
