My son Julian has watched me say no to opportunities that looked impressive from the outside. At UCLA's business school, he asked me to explain it.

I left Spencer Stuart by choice. I had a vision for the book (Career Mapping), and I'd spent years watching who got access to the room and who didn't. I wanted to give more people the map.

Most people think executive search works like corporate recruiting. It doesn't. Google had 3,000 recruiters managing 4 million applicants in 2016. They hired 25,000. Executive recruiters don't work from applicant pools. It's precise, methodical, and most people never learn how it actually works.

That's what I left to teach.
