In this video I explore the town of Watrous, Saskatchewan.
Watrous has a population of about 2000 people and it is about 120 km southeast of Saskatoon.
It is about 5 km south of Little Manitou Lake and the resort village of Manitou Beach. A few days ago I posted a video on Manitou Beach and I wanted to follow up with a separate video on Watrous.
This area had settlers for many years, and the town of Watrous was established in 1906 when the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway established a divisional point at this site. Watrous was incorporated as a village in 1908 and a town in 1909.
The nearby salt lake and resort village were very influential in the development of the town, many people worked at the lake and then lived in Watrous.
The town is also notable for being the location of the transmitter of CBK, CBC Radio One's main station in Saskatchewan.
CBK opened in Watrous in 1939. This site was selected for many reasons. This location was roughly in between Saskatoon and Regina, the area is flat prairie and allows radio waves to be broadcast unobstructed, the mineral content of the surrounding soil is conducive to radio ground waves and the telecommunications infrastructure of the Canadian National Railway was integral to radio operations.
The CBK transmitter building was done in the art deco style, and it remained a very prominent and iconic building in Watrous for many decades until it was demolished in 2015.
The transmitter in Watrous continues broadcasting around the clock, but many years ago the studios were moved to Regina.
The interesting history of this area is on display at the fantastic Watrous Manitou Beach Heritage Centre. This museum is of a much higher quality than you'll typically find in a small town of this size, and I would definitely recommend visiting this place if you're in town. They are open Friday and Saturday 11-3.
Another interesting piece of history is at the All Saints Anglican Church. The great west window of the church dates form pre-reformation England - it is estimated to be from 1642-1646.
Watrous has a lot to offer visitors and residents.
VIA rail stops in Watrous on The Canadian train which travels between Vancouver and Toronto with plenty of stops in between.
Watrous has an indoor fitness facility, a sports field area with ball diamonds, a football field and a playground, a curling rink, a hockey arena and a swimming pool - plenty of options for staying active!
There are numerous restaurants and hotels in town for travelers seeking rest and sustenance.
I enjoyed my time in this area, and I would definitely recommend visiting the town of Watrous!
