My pond is finally 100% full — and it looks incredible. The problem is, it still won’t stay that way.
For the last year and a half, I’ve been chasing a pond leak that does not seem to be a normal dam seep or shoreline issue. This pond was excavated in an old farm field, and I’m finding old clay drainage tile that appears to be pulling dyed pond water away from the pond and dumping it on the other side of the barn.
In this video, I dig into the leak, find more old clay field tile, use a sump pump to keep the hole workable, test the water level with a rotary laser, and build a small dam around the pipe to see what happens. Instead of solving the problem, it proves something else: water is still moving underground and finding another place to come up.
Now I need your help. If you have experience with old farm drainage tile, clay tile, pond leaks, excavated ponds, or finding hidden drain lines, let me know what you would do. Should I chase the tile from the leak side? Dig closer to the pond? Try a sewer scope? Use air to find bubbles? Wait until fall when the water level drops?
This pond is too nice when it’s full to let an old clay pipe keep draining it.
