Tuxkins, it’s Halloween time — and we’re giving Arch Linux a dark, spooky makeover! 👻
In this video, I’ll show you how to customize Hyprland on Arch Linux into a sleek, creepy, Halloween-themed setup
💀 Install and set up Hyprland the right way
🦇 Apply GTK, icon, and font themes for that haunting dark look
🎨 Configure Waybar, Hyprlock, and Hyprpaper using ready-to-use dotfiles
⚙️ Use Starship prompt and modern CLI tools like bat and eza
🎃 End up with a Linux desktop so beautiful it’s scary!

👣 Step 1: Initial setup commands (Valid for Arch Linux)

To install Hyprland and other necessary packages:
sudo pacman -S hyprland xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland hyprpolkitagent
For supportive utilities:
sudo pacman -S hyprpaper hyprpicker hyprlock waybar wofi dunst fastfetch bat eza starship pcmanfm
For Firefox:
sudo pacman -S firefox qt5ct nwg-look
Enable SDDM service
sudo pacman -S sddm
sudo systemctl enable sddm.service
Kitty and Nano
sudo pacman -S kitty nano

👣 Step 2: Download Hyprland setup dot config files
Download dot files for Hyprland: github.com/itsfoss/text-script-files/tree/master/config/halloween-hyprland
Extract the downloaded config files and move to the config/halloween-hyprland folder.
Copy the images in the wallpapers folder to a directory called ~/Pictures/Wallpapers. Create it if it does not exist.

👣 Step 3: Download and install GTK themes, icons and fonts
Download the Everforest GTK theme dark borderless macos buttons.: gnome-look.org/p/1695467
Download Dominus Funeral icon theme dark style: gnome-look.org/s/Gnome/p/1273980
Download the "Creepster" font from Google Fonts website: fonts.google.com/specimen/Creepster
Create ~/.themes, ~/.icons, and ~/.fonts respectively.
Extract the "Creepster" font file and place it at ~/.fonts.
Extract the theme file and paste it at ~/.themes
Extract the icon file and paste it at ~/.icons
Install Nerd fonts on Arch Linux with:
sudo pacman -S ttf-firacode-nerd ttf-cascadia-code-nerd ttf-cascadia-mono-nerd woff2-font-awesome ttf-jetbrains-mono
They can also be downloaded from: nerdfonts.com/font-downloads
Just search for these and download:
- Firacode Mono
- Caskaydia
- Fontawesome free desktop fonts
- JetBrains Mono

👣 Step 4: Modify the dot files with correct monitor names
Get your monitor name with:
hyprctl moniors
Open the config.jsonc file on the downloaded directory and replace any occurrence of Virtual-1 with your monitor name.
Also, take a look at the panel item. If you see any item that is not needed in the panel, you can remove it from the [modules-position] part.
Open the hyprland config in the downloaded directory. Change all reference to Virtual-1 to your monitor name.
Similarly, replace monitor name in the hyprlock and hyprpaper config files.

👣 Step 5: Move the dot files in their respective places
Copy the entire waybar directory (including the monitor name adjustments) and paste it to ~/.config directory.
Paste other configs, except the hypr and wallpaper folder to the ~/.config. directory.
You already have a Hyprland config file in place. But we have created a Hyprland config file for Halloween with some preset.
IMPORTANT: Change the path in the mv command below
cp ~/.config/hypr/hyprland.conf ~/.config/hypr/hyprland.conf.bak
mv --exchange ~/.config/hypr/hyprland.conf /path/to/new/hyprland/config
Now, copy the hyprlock.conf and hyprpaper.conf file to ~/.config/hypr directory.

👣 Step 6: Apply themes
Open the NWG-Look app and set the GTK theme, icon theme and font (Creepster font).
Open the Qt5ct app and change the theme to darker. Also apply icon theme and change the normal font to "Creepster".

👣 Step 7: Terminal customization
You have already copied our starship.toml to ~/.config
Presuming you are using bash shell, add this to your ~/.bashrc file and save it:
eval "$(starship init bash)"
Optionally, add command aliases for ls, cat commands in your bashrc file:
alias ls='eza -lG --color always --icons'
alias la='eza -alG --color always --icons'
alias cat='bat --color always --theme="Dracula"'
