I once promised I'd never teach again because I was terrified of the stage, but failure became my training to embrace who I truly am.
My father had a plan for my life
There was just one small problem.
It wasn't my life.
He wouldn't pay for college unless I became a teacher, so I dutifully squeezed myself into the little box marked Teacher.
Meanwhile, Joan was somewhere inside saying, "Excuse me?"
How many decisions did we make when we were young because somebody else knew exactly who we should become?
Parent.
Teacher.
Partner.
Culture.
Religion.
The world can get awfully noisy.
And underneath all that noise is something quieter:
your own soul signal.
Mine eventually led me somewhere completely unexpected.
