I Had a Very Emotional Experience With the Elephants in Thailand. The best ethical sanctuary park in Southeast Asia is the Green Elephant Sanctuary in Phuket. It’s an amazing and magical experience that should definitely be on your bucket list!
If you come to Phuket or Thailand, you have to visit Green Elephant Sanctuary Park. It’s an incredible place. You can choose between different tours and activities that they offer and book the tour here: green-elephantsanctuarypark.com/en The money goes towards a great cause, rescuing the elephants from unlawful owners and cruel farms, and supporting the community and the environment that is safe and good for the animals.
It was a very emotional time for me. I previously witnessed other elephant farms and parks in Thailand, which were heart-breaking. The animals had their legs chained, they were caged in the smallest space and they were beaten if they didn’t cooperate, didn’t want to participate in the elephant rides with tourists or weren’t posing for pictures in the ‘’correct’’ way. It was disgusting, and one of these situations that made me feel helpless, even though I really wanted to do something to help them.
Thankfully in The Green Elephant Sanctuary Park in Phuket, there is none of that. You can’t ride the elephants here. The animals are not forced to do anything and no force is used against the animals. The animals themselves choose whether or not they want to participate with human interactions. But since food and feeding, mud baths and showers are included, they are very happy to be involved.
As you could see from the video, the caretakers really care for the animals and their needs. If they know a certain elephant doesn’t like to be touched, they let you know about it beforehand and don’t let you touch them. Don’t worry, there are plenty of elephants there that like or don’t mind being touched so you can still certainly stroke and interact with them.
Before you visit Phuket and Southeast Asia please do your research about the places with Elephants and only visit ethical elephant camp or sanctuary - please don't ride the elephants! Riding is terrible for them and they are treated very badly at those places.
