Hey Sign Fam! In today's video, my deaf fiancé and I talk about the controversial topic of sign names. These names do more than just identify, they reflect a person's unique traits and features in sign language.
However- Ryan, my fiancé challenges the idea that only deaf individuals can assign sign names. He argues that hearing people can create their own sign names if they have fluency in sign language or strong ties to the deaf community. This opens up a discussion about cultural appropriation and the boundaries of identity.
We also talk about why we think the deaf generally aims to hold this tradition within their own culture, the significance behind sign names, and what happens when outsiders attempt to engage with this practice.
