Both my cats drink from the toilet. I happened to have the camera nearby this morning when my big fat baby Cory was doing it.
I don't know why they do this. I guess it's because they're thirsty. They rarely touch the water bowl, even though we keep it clean and filled for them. Apparently they prefer the toilet bowl.
