Sequential abandoned the Prophet X before sorting out all the bugs with it, or maybe that's the reason they dropped it for dead? They couldn't be bothered with pesky customers any more? Customers that paid $4000+ for a synth/sampler with a cheap PC motherboard inside and a crap power supply.
*in the previous edit of the video I mention the Mean Well PT-75C as a valid replacement if you have troubles with the factory PSU. As it turns out the PT-75C, although it will deliver the right voltage rails, has another pinout and pin configuration on the output connector so it won't be a DIRECT replacement as I say in this video. The Mean Well PT-65C will therefore be the best option if you want to do this yourself. Sequential has confirmed this. They would also like to state that they do recommend the model that ships with the PX and that they still can deliver this to customers having trouble.*
Luckily there are some things you can do to fix some of the issues.
Don't be shocked to open it up only to find a cheap PC motherboard inside (running QNX) and a Mean Well power supply. This is getting more and more common on flagship synths, even "analog" ones.
Just because they put some analog filter chips inside, doesn't mean that ups the value by the thousands. 8 analog filter chips is not more than dinner for 4 at MacDonalds these days.
Anyways, I've heard of people having to pay over 150 dollars to Sequential for a new PSU when in reality you can buy a new one, upgraded and more powerful, for 1/4 of that price. Another scam move by Sequential.
The Prophet X is still out there being sold new as they're still in stock several places, but unless you're getting it for a really good price and I mean REALLY good price, below $2000 I will not recommend it any more. It's a great way of assembling a lot of sampled sounds, but considering you'll have no idea what revision of Prophet X you will be getting and the way they tend to break down I'd be afraid. Very afraid.
All the above said, my Prophet X now works as i should and I still use it a lot. It is still a perfect way of having all my vintage synths in one box for a gig. It sounds very good too with it's analog filters, that has never been the issue.I question the price.
